When I Feel Like I Am Not Good Enough

Truth louder than the voice on bad days

The Word ESV

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb.
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.

Psalm 139:13-14

The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.

Zephaniah 3:17

but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9

Devotional

There's a voice that shows up on bad days.

It shows up after you miss the shot. After the test you actually studied for. When you look around and everybody else seems to have it figured out and you don't.

It says: you're not good enough.

And that voice follows you. It sits down next to you at lunch. It waits for you at tryouts. It gets louder when you're standing next to your brother or your sister, the one who seems to do everything right.

The worst part is it sounds true. You can even name reasons. Real times you messed up.

So let's be honest about something. You're not perfect.

Nobody is. Not one person.

And the Bible doesn't fix this by telling you to look in the mirror and say nice things until you believe them. It does something way better. It tells you where your worth actually comes from.

And it isn't from how you did today.

"For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb."

Knitted. That's slow, careful work. Somebody making something on purpose, one stitch at a time, paying attention the whole way.

So your worth starts with God deciding to make you. Not with you being impressive.

But here's the thing. Even the best day you ever have isn't enough to earn God's love. Not yours, not mine, not anybody's. If it worked that way, we'd all be out.

So look at what God actually did:

"God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

While. Not after we got it together. Not once we hit a certain score.

While we were at our worst, Jesus came and died for us.

Which means God's love for you was never a prize for being good enough. It's a gift given to people who aren't.

The Bible says it plain: "By grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God."

Think about the difference between a gift and a paycheck. You earn a paycheck. You just get a gift.

God did it that way on purpose, so nobody could ever stand up and say "I made it because I was good enough."

And then there's this one, which might be my favorite verse in the Bible:

"He will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing."

God sings about you.

Not because you won. Because you're his.

So next time that voice starts up, you can answer it.

Don't answer with a list of stuff you've done well. That list always has holes in it.

Say this instead: God loved me before I did anything at all.

You don't have to earn something that's already yours.
