In the Waiting Room

Everybody knows the waiting room.

The chairs that don't quite fit. The magazines nobody reads. The clock on the wall. You came at 1:15 for a 1:30 and now it's 2:40 and nobody's called your name. Your whole body is leaning toward the door. You can't leave. You can't do anything. You can only wait.

And that's the easy kind.

The hard kind is the prayer you've been praying for six years. The job that hasn't opened. The child who hasn't come home. The healing that hasn't happened. You know what you asked for. You know God heard it. And the silence stretches out, and you start to wonder whether waiting on God is just a spiritual way of saying nothing is happening.

David knew that room. Psalm 27 ends with this. "Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!" He says it twice. Because once isn't enough. And notice what comes before it. "I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living." That's not certainty about when. It's certainty about who. David doesn't know the timeline. He knows the character.

Paul explains why waiting is built into faith. "Hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees?" In other words, if you already had it, you wouldn't need hope. Waiting isn't the absence of faith. It's the environment faith lives in. Then he says we "wait for it with patience." That word is literally "staying under." Remaining under the weight instead of squirming out from under it.

James gives you a farmer. "See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth." The farmer doesn't stand in the field yelling at the dirt. He can't make it rain. He can't speed up the roots. He plants and waits, and the waiting isn't passive. It's trust with a calendar. He knows the rains come. Early and late. They always have.

But here's the verse that changes the whole room. Isaiah 30:18. "Therefore the LORD waits to be gracious to you."

Read that again. The LORD waits.

You've been picturing yourself in the waiting room and God behind a closed door, busy with something else. Isaiah says the opposite. God is waiting too. Not because he's slow. Because grace has a right moment, and he's holding it until then. The waiting isn't a gap in his care. It's part of it.

And if you doubt that, look at the longest wait in history. Thousands of years between the promise in Genesis 3 and a baby in Bethlehem. Generations who "died in faith, not having received the things promised." Then "when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son." Not early. Not late. Full. And then three more days, from Friday to Sunday, when it looked like God had forgotten entirely. He hadn't. He was waiting to be gracious. And on the third day the grace showed up with a body.

So sit in the chair. Let your heart take courage. The one you're waiting for is not behind a closed door. He's in the room with you, and he's waiting for the exact moment to call your name.
